Classic Yacht for sale in Kent.

Built-in 1983 this classic yacht now a project boat was formerly known as "Greater Manchester Challenge," "Morning Star," and now "Songaskind." Constructed as a steel gaff-rigged ketch, she was purpose-built as a sail training vessel to introduce young people to life at sea, often providing their first experience on the water.

Her construction was a community effort, carried out by predominantly workers from the Manpower Services Commission alongside the youth of Greater Manchester, funded entirely by public donations.

Sonntagskind offers accommodation for sixteen cadets and three officers. She was originally built to meet the specifications of a Board of Trade Class XI Sail Training Yacht. Although her wooden masts have not survived, a single wooden boom has recently been recovered.

The vessel is being sold by way of sealed tender, as is where is at the time of sale, on the Admiralty Marshal's Conditions of Sale.  A copy of the Conditions of Sale can be obtained upon request from ourselves.

Accommodation

The yacht features a spacious U-shaped galley, equipped with a fixed oven, hob, and grill, along with ample kitchen storage and two sinks. Designed as a training yacht, she accommodates up to nineteen people, with berths originally allocated for three officers and sixteen cadets.

The large aft cabin shares a head with a nearby two-berth cabin, while the second head is situated between the forward berths and the galley. Her deck area is generously sized and finished with teak decking, providing plenty of space for training.

History & Construction

Songaskind is a gaff-rigged ketch, purpose-built as a sail training vessel to introduce young people to the sea—often their first experience on the water.

She was constructed through a collaborative effort involving skilled hands from the Manpower Services Commission and young people from Greater Manchester. Funded by public donations, her steel hull was fabricated in Liverpool, transported by road, and completed in the historic Crossley engine sheds. She was later launched at Salford Quays on the Manchester Ship Canal.

Songaskind provides accommodation for sixteen cadets and three officers. Designed to meet the standards of a Board of Trade Class XI Sail Training Yacht, she served for many years as the Ocean Youth Club's designated vessel for the Northwest.

Though her original masts have been lost, the complete set of design drawings remains preserved, courtesy of the Laurent Giles Archive.

The hull features a chine design with full steel construction. She has teak decking and three hatches: a bow hatch, a midship hatch with ladder access, and an aft hatch with ladder access.
