Broker Remarks

Thalia built in 1888 is a truly special boat. She is in outstanding condition after a four year refit and maintenance by her shipwright owner. Built by G F Wanhill of Poole in 1888 as a racing yacht she is the last surviving yacht of his (three of the twelve yachts in the original 100 Guineas Cup (America's Cup Race) were from this builder. She was launched 'Thalia' and her name has remained the same ever since. She is ready to race or cruise. She has raced on the UK and the Caribbean circuits in the last few years with her current owners and won silverwear at almost everything she has taken part in, including 1st overall at Grenada 2008/9, 2nd Antigua Classic yacht regatta 2008, and prehaps most impressively of all 1st overall Concourse d'elegance at Antigua Classics (the first privately owned yacht to beat all the professionally maintained super yachts). She is also a very capable blue water cruising yacht completing her first transatlantic crossing in 2007. She is quite possibly the oldest yacht ever to sail across the Atlantic. She has been lived on very comfortably by her current owners since then in Carriacou Grenada. There is also a mooring in Carriacou available with the boat if you fancy keeping her in the warmer weather. With Thalia you are not just buying a beautiful racing yacht, you are buying a piece of yachting history.

Accommodation

The accommodation below provides 8 berths. There is a double v berth forward and the a single to the port side in the forward cabin. On the starboard side is a work bench which can also double as another berth. The main saloon has a centreline table with settees/berths on either side. The large deck hatch provides a lot of natural light below making the boat feel bright and airy. There is also a wood burning stove for heating in the winter months. on the port side is a door forward to the heads and shower room. Although there is modern toilet on board this has been cleverly disguised so as not to take away from the traditional feel of the yachts. The original willow pattern wedgewood toilet is still on board but has been removed to prolong it's life. Glass deck prisms provide more light around the heads and the galley. The Galley is aft of the saloon area at the bottom of the companionway stairs making it very easy to use while under way. There is tiled work top, with a 4 burner gas cooker with oven and grill. A sink with both pressurised hot and cold water and a hand pump to use at sea. there is a 2007 Isotherm fridge on the starboard side with again is cleverly disguised to maintain the feel of the boat. The aft stateroom is a real delight. With a spacious double berth to port and a small childs berth to starboard. In the centre is the original washbasin with hot and cold running water. Light is provided by the original opening skylight.

Mechanical and Rigging

Thalia built in 1888, is built of Pitchpine and Oak planking on Oak frames and bronze fastenings. The long lead keel fairs to solid timber rudder. Originally built with a centreboard this was removed and sealed at the end of 19th century (108 years ago) and has not sailed with it since! One of the features of Wanhill's techniques was the tapering of the planking from end to end and also the frames, bigger and stronger where needed, were also thinner and lighter towards the top. This kept the weight from the ends of the yacht and also gave immense strength by way of the keel and mast where needed. She is straight stemmed but with a cutaway forefoot she sails straight and true thanks to the long keel and has an easy motion whether pointing into the waves or running downwind. An intended restoration was started in Bosham in the late 1980's But the owner soon ran out of money and Thalia sat for many years with no work happening. The current owners bought the boat in 1993 when they heard the yard was going to break the boat up. They started a four year full restoration and refit. Luckily the interior had been removed and put into storage so could be restored to it original condition. Old owners provided photographic records so that the interior could be rebuilt as accurately as possible and missing pannels replicated. The deck hatches had also been removed so these to are original to the boat. The engine is a Yanmar YGM3 30HP and is only a few years old. Fuel: 80 litres in 2 x stainless steel tanks Water: 90 gallons in 6 interconnected stainless steel tanks. Batteries: 3 x 110Amps On deck there is as much varnish as below. With a gaff rig and all wooden spars she looks stunning under sail. All her sails were made by Oceanis in 2001 and are all in good condition. They consist of : Gaff main sail Top sail Stay sail Large flying jib Small flying Jib Tri sail
